Who are you, what you do and who you serve?
We are a unique and very eclectic string quartet who provide musical entertainment or background music from all kinds of genres and styles for all kinds of events. Weddings, receptions, anniversaries, funerals, house concerts and also various local bands and artists.
How and when did you get started in the industry?
We started under another name a number of years ago, but became Luminous String Quartet officially in 2015 when we launched our website. I began playing violin at the age of four and started in the wedding industry as a teenager when I was 14. I personally have been "in the biz" for over 30 years.
Where are you based and where do you meet with clients?
We are based in south St. Vital and usually meet with clients at my home. But with video chat forums being available, and the need for everyone to be safe during a pandemic, not to mention that everyone's time is sacred, we have been meeting primarily over Zoom.
What services do you offer?
We offer live music in String Quartet, String Trio, String Duo and String Solo (violin or cello) versions. Each ensemble version has different repertoire based on style of music, with the full String Quartet having the most diverse repertoire to offer.
What is the biggest trend you have seen since being in the industry?
The move from traditional and classical music at weddings to more pop and rock infused styles.
Which venue do you work in the most frequently?
There isn't one venue we perform at the most, as so many of our clients get married in so many different places. Each year it varies. We enjoy each and every venue we perform at, although we do have our favourites.
How far in advance do your clients typically book you?
Usually clients book us one to two years in advance. Some are very last minute.
Can you give us one of your industry tips that brides or grooms don't often know?
One thing that I share with my clients each time is to avoid whatever everyone else is doing. Music is personal and should reflect you, your partner, your families, etc. It is so much more memorable to you and to your guests when you choose music that represents who you are or the kind of music you enjoy.
How do you stand out?
We are the only String Quartet in the city (and likely the province) who offers such a diverse and eclectic repertoire of music. Playing the part of not only Artistic Director but Arranger as well, it has been exciting to create arrangements of different styles of music in a string quartet format. Most recently, we put out a CD of Canadian Classic Rock which were all arranged by me (which is available for purchase on the homepage of our website). As a result of this, I have personally been in contact with numerous notable Canadian artists and bands and have collaborated as a soloist with some of them already.
Anything else you would like to mention?
We LOVE performing at weddings. Being able to provide music for our clients and their guests in order to create the perfect musical atmosphere and vision is an amazing feeling. To be a part of their start as a couple which becomes their history is a true blessing, and we are so honoured to be asked to be a part of it.
