Who are you, what do you serve?

We are Sugar + Salt Bakeshoppe, we specialize in elevated home style desserts and custom cakes from birthday to weddings and everything in between.

What services do you offer?

Our wedding philosophy is simple; to create beautiful cakes + enticing sweet tables that will please the eye just as much as the palette.  We specialize in buttercream wedding cakes styled with fresh florals but we strive to create unique designs that are reflection of our couple and their aesthetic of their big day!

How did you get started and in the wedding industry, and what inspired you to start a bakery?

I got the opportunity to study cake design in Toronto where I was able to hone my skills especially when it came to wedding cakes.  After making making birthday cakes for friends and family for years and eventually clients, I knew weddings was the next progression and we went into the industry head first and haven’t looked back! A storefront was always the goal, after working for many years out of commercial kitchens, I knew I wanted my own space where I could not only have kitchen space that was ours but to start to build a little community for people who came into our shoppe!

What do you enjoy most about working in the wedding industry and serving couples on their special day?

We have been really lucky to work with really great couples over the years and getting to meet them and have the privilege of being a small part of their big day is something we never take for granted.  We also have a lot of couple who then come back to us for baby showers and their kids birthdays so getting to grow with their families is really lovey too. The best part about working in the industry is that not only are our colleagues in the industry mega talented but they are all really good people.  We may be a small industry but we are mighty and it’s so nice to have support and encouragement from each other.

What is the most important consideration when couples are choosing a vendor?

Make sure you find the cake designer who is the best fit for you aesthetically and with what they offer. It’s great to do your research about the design style of the various bakeries in the city and based on their work, inquiry with the bakeries that you feel will align well with the vision you are looking for with your wedding cake or sweet table.

What is the ideal timeline for booking?

At least 6-8 months prior to your big day is a good timeline.

What is the best piece of advice you would offer to couples planning their weddings?

Stay true to your vision and don’t be afraid to bring your personality to life throughout your wedding day!  It’s so easy to get caught up these days in outside ’noise’ and opinions and easy to fall into trends (don’t bet me long we love a trend!) but not being afraid to interject your personal style and flare into your wedding day always ends up being some of our favourite weddings to work on.

Can you share you favourite wedding trend or design ideas your currently excited about?

The vintage piped buttercream cakes are not going anywhere for the moment and we are still truly loving them.  I also love the idea of a table mini cakes either on each guests table or on a set cake table.  I think it’s such a fun way to add multiple designs that are cohesive and letting the guests have their choice of flavour!

How do you stand out?

I hope that we do by how we interact and work with our couples through the process of booking their weddings.  We really care about what we do and the fact that our couples are trusting us with the biggest day of their lives is something we don’t take lightly.  I like to think that our care and attention to detail make us stand out.  I think the fact that we put just as much care into the taste as well as the design of our weddings cakes and sweet tables is something we really strive for.
