Who are you, what you do and who you serve?
I'm Megan - my partner René and I are the owners of Wild Skies Resort, located on Treaty 1 territory outside of Seven Sisters Falls, Manitoba. We offer full-weekend camping weddings and all-inclusive elopements for couples dreaming of hosting their intimate wedding surrounded by nature. We help couples craft stress-free, non-traditional weddings where the focus of the day(s) is quality time spent with their people. We encourage couples to throw out the rule book when it comes to planning their wedding - especially the parts that make it feel like a performance instead of a celebration of their love.
What services do you offer?
Wedding wise, we offer exclusive weekend bookings where you and up to 60 friends are the only ones on the property for 2 nights/3 days OR our elopement package which includes up to 10 guests and a 2 night stay just for the couple. The resort is also open to the public when we aren't hosting events, with stays from cozy canvas tents to expansive domes and our luxe cabin. We're not a fan of hidden fees, so our rentals include all the firewood you might need, canoe/kayak/SUP rentals, tons of lawn + board games, sauna + cold plunges, 3 ceremony arch options, and more! I'm also a wedding photographer (megansteen.com), René is a marriage commissioner and we offer in-house bar packages to make planning + set up even easier!

How did you get started in the wedding industry, and what inspired you to start a venue?
We were both introduced to the wedding industry as photographers. When not working, we love to spend our time outdoors as much as possible or cooking for and hosting friends - preferably both at the same time! While on a backpacking trip in 2020 (yup - Covid times), we started dreaming of creating a space that would allow us to bring people together and make the outdoors more accessible to those who otherwise don't get to experience it. Our 3 year plan got turned upside down when we stumbled upon the property that is now Wild Skies, just 2 months after we started dreaming. We opened 6 months after possession and the rest is history!
What do you enjoy most about working in the wedding industry and serving couples on their special day?
Being able to guide and support couples to plan an intentional wedding weekend is the core of Wild Skies. It's such a joy when we suggest a timeline, event, or detail that encourages deeper connection with their guests and we see their faces light up when they realize 'Hey, I guess we don't have to do it the way everyone else does. This fits our vision better!'. Being able to empower couples to plan the wedding they actually want is our greatest joy.

What do you believe is the most important consideration when couples are choosing a venue?
Even though the wedding day is about you and your relationship, the experience and comfort of your guests (who you're choosing to share this day with!) should be carefully thought of. Take into consideration how you hope to spend that quality time with your people and whether the venue space fits that vision.
What is the ideal timeline for couples to book your services in advance of their wedding day?
Weekend weddings typically book 12-18 months in advance - the meadow pavilion is available from May long weekend until the end of September. We also often host weekday celebrations (hey it's a mini destination wedding, the day of the week doesn't matter!) which can often be booked up to 6 months in advance. Elopements can be booked 2 weeks - 1 year in advance and are available year-round.

What is the best piece of advice you would offer to couples planning their wedding?
Trust your vendors! We've witnessed so many unique situations at weddings that our advice is coming from experience and we always have your best interests at heart. Also - communicate! With each other, with your parents and guests and especially with your vendors.
Can you share your favorite wedding trend or design idea that you're currently excited about?
It's no secret that I'm not afraid of colour (if you've visited the resort....you know!) and I'm so excited to see weddings not shying away from bold colours and unique statements.

How do you stand out?
However we possibly can. We want to continuously break down barriers in both the outdoor recreation space and the wedding industry. Nevermind that we're the first to combine the two of them in Manitoba!
